Lucy Cavendish College – part of the University of Cambridge – gave a true sporting welcome to its newest Honorary Fellow, tennis legend Martina Navratilova.

Visiting the College for the first time on 12 May, Martina enjoyed meeting with students, Fellows and staff. On arrival, she took to the river to test out her rowing skills with the Cambridge University Women’s Boat Club – taking time to talk with members, including Lucy Cavendish student Myriam Goudet.

Back on dry land, Martina spent time touring the College, before her official induction as an Honorary Fellow in a ceremony led by President Jackie Ashley. Members of the College then enjoyed listening to Martina talk with wit and insight on topics including her early life in Czechoslovakia, her role models, political views and commitment to equality. She also shared views on tennis – particularly how the game has evolved and what it takes to win, plus a few tips on executing the perfect backhand! Reflecting on what tennis has taught her about life, she highlighted the importance of setting goals; living in the moment; surrounding yourself with positive people; getting the right help and giving something back.
